Groundwater is of vital importance to us all. Over half of us in the U.S. drink groundwater, and around 90 percent of rural residents utilize groundwater for drinking water. Lake communities are becoming increasingly popular places to have a home, both as part-time vacation homes and year-round residences. The majority of these lake homes utilize septic systems for wastewater treatment. Septic system management, including regular maintenance, inspection, and pumping, is vital to the protection of groundwater.
Goals of the Get Pumped septic education kit
• To increase awareness among lake residents in Nebraska about the importance of proper septic system operation and maintenance.
• To provide ready-to-use community education tools for lake residents and their partners to educate themselves, fellow homeowners, and lake visitors about septic systems.
• To encourage action among lake residents, communities, and their partners to work towards groundwater protection through septic system management.
How to use this kit
The materials included in this kit are designed for lake residents and their partners to use as an educational resource, perhaps as part of a proactive public awareness campaign, to help educate neighbors, or in response to requests for information. These materials may also be used to commemorate special events, such as National Groundwater Awareness Week (recognized the third week in March), Earth Day (April 22), or National Drinking Water Week (celebrated each May), or add an educational element to a community event, such as a county fair or home show.
