Nebraska Rain Garden Workshops

Thanks to funding from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, The Groundwater Foundation was able to offer three Nebraska communities the opportunity to get their citizens involved in improving their water quality during the spring and summer of 2009.

Workshops were held and rain gardens installed at:

• Hastings Museum in Hastings, Nebraska on May 27, 2009
• Viking Center in Stromsburg, Nebraksa on June 6, 2009
• Cody Park in North Platte, Nebraska on June 27, 2009

The three communities received a professionally designed rain garden and a one-day educational workshop for community residents. The workshop was designed for homeowners and provided participants with the knowledge, motivation, and take-home resources to help them design and install their very own rain garden. Workshop topics included:

• Rain garden basics
• Design and implementation
• Plant selection
• Hands-on rain garden installation
  

The goal of this project was to increase the number of rain gardens in Nebraska. While one rain garden alone cannot solve Nebraska’s water quality issues, hundreds scattered across the state can make a measurable difference.

The Demonstration Rain Garden Workshop Project is funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Water Act Section 319 as facilitated by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.
