Lake McConaughy Education to Action Project

The Lake McConaughy Education to Action project was established to address problems and issues related to on-site wastewater treatment systems, such as septic systems, at Lake McConaughy (located in Ogallala, Nebraska). The multi-year project began in January 2002 and concluded in December 2006. The primary objectives of the project were:

• to provide information and learning opportunities for area residents and business owners about septic systems that can be a nonpoint source of pollution to surface and groundwater; and
• to support and encourage citizens to take voluntary steps to address septic systems and other locally important environmental and natural resources issues.

The Lake McConaughy Education to Action project is sponsored by The Groundwater Foundation.  The project is made possible by a grant from the Clean Water Act, Section 319 Nonpoint Source Pollution Program which is administered by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.

 

Get Pumped: Septic Education Kit
A key outcome of this program is an easy-to-use educational kit, designed to increase awareness among lake residents and other septic system owners in Nebraska about proper septic system operation and maintenance; provide ready-to-use community education tools for lake residents and their partners to educate themselves, fellow homeowners, and lake visitors about septic systems; and to encourage action among lake residents, communities, and their partners to work towards groundwater protection through septic system management.
