LEAP into Groundwater is a project-based educational curriculum developed to engage students in learning about groundwater and taking action to protect their water resources. Designed for middle and high school-age students LEAP can be implemented in the classroom, during after school programs, or as part of any other youth group activities.
What is LEAP?
The LEAP into Groundwater project is presented in four phases. The first phase is to learn. Using The Groundwater Foundation’s Awesome Aquifer Kit educators can teach about the basics of groundwater including how it moves, how it becomes contaminated, and how groundwater can be protected. Educate is the second phase. Students organize and host an event where they share what they have learned about groundwater with their peers, parents, or members of the community. Next LEAP participants act. During this phase students choose a groundwater-friendly activity to implement at their school or in their community. The final phase of LEAP involves students in sustainable groundwater protection. LEAP participants recruit their school or community to participate in long-term protection efforts through one of The Groundwater Foundation’s community-based action programs like Groundwater Guardian or Groundwater Guardian Green Sites.
Who can LEAP?
You can! LEAP is designed so any group leader or educator, whether you have a science background or not, can lead the project. The LEAP Manual provides all the needed resources and materials to implement LEAP.
