Youth Award for Excellence and Leadership in Groundwater
Award Background
In 1996, The Groundwater Foundation established an award in conjunction with its Groundwater University program. The award was created to recognize a student for his/her outstanding leadership and creation of innovative groundwater protection projects. This award was endowed by W.C. Foxley and E.P. Taiganides and brought inspiration and recognition to deserving youth over the years.
In 2004, The Groundwater Foundation expanded eligibility for the Youth Award for Excellence and Leadership in Groundwater to include any student, age 12-17, in the U.S. that gives time, energy, and knowledge to promote the protection of groundwater in his/her community. In addition, the student’s actions will have the ability to be replicated by other students and the potential to empower the community to protect groundwater.
Goals of the Youth Award for Excellence and Leadership in Groundwater
Recognize a student or group of students for their groundwater stewardship
Spread the word about groundwater
Inspire others to become involved in groundwater protection
Demonstrate the effectiveness of youth involvement in environmental issues
Selection Criteria
Nominations will be considered based on excellence commensurate with student’s age.The award winner will have:
Areas of achievement may include but are not limited to:
Preventing groundwater contamination
Conserving water resources at home, school, and community
Educating peers and adults about groundwater
Working with public officials to affect change
Eligibility
Any student or group of students age 12 to 17 is eligible for the award. The strength of the award program will be the leadership and local stewardship represented by the individuals honored.
