Community Profile:

Groundwater provides 95 percent of the drinking water supply to the area's 249,171 residents. Saltwater intrusion from excessive pumpage continues to be a major concern for area residents. In addition, since surface waters are common in the area, many residents believe they receive drinking water primarily from these sources rather than groundwater. Chatham County uses Groundwater Guardian to educate the community about their source of drinking water and to encourage conservation and limit potential pollution problems.

Result Oriented Activities:

• Developed a resolution for the City of Savannah's Council to extend a moratorium on banning aquifer storage and recovery practices into the Floridan Aquifer.
• Created a program targeting the Latin community in the county. User-friendly water conservation materials were translated into Spanish and distributed at events and educational facilities.
