Community Profile:

Although there is an abundant supply of groundwater in Dunn County, providing the 38,000 residents with 100 percent of their drinking water, there is almost a total lack of understanding about groundwater, increasing the risk of contamination. Dunn County uses Groundwater Guardian to educate the public through the media, schools, by providing materials to the public and talks to government and elected people.

Result Oriented Activities:

• Continued to publish a map titled "Location of Recharge Areas to the Sandstone Aquifer in Dunn County, Wisconsin." The 22 townships and the county use the map to conduct Smart Growth planning and 30,000 people have used the map since its completion in 2005.
• Wrote and published articles about groundwater/surface water science in the local newspaper. Gave presentations on protecting the aquifer from pollution to service clubs and townships. Thousands have been reached to date.
• Continued to gather and map data showing nitrate and atrazine in Dunn County.
• Developing an ordinance to protect groundwater recharge areas in the town of Menomonie.
