Community Profile:
Groundwater provides 45 percent of the drinking water to the area's 204,000 residents. When it organized in 1991 the Washington County Watershed Alliance identified various threats to groundwater, including abandoned wells, hazardous chemical wastes, abandoned mine drainage, malfunctioning septic systems, underground storage tanks and excess sediment deposits to streams. Other concerns include the effects of long-wall mining, questions about the adequacy of stormwater controls, and water well protection efforts. Washington County uses Groundwater Guardian to continue public education efforts in local schools and for the general public.
