Green Sites Have a Positive Impact
On each Green Site application, sites report and environmental impact data related to their maintenance practices. Participating sites have documented impressive positive environmental impact numbers since the program began in 2007.
Participating Green Sites have:
Reduced fertilizer use by 791,291 pounds. The majority of sites base fertilizer amounts on nutrient analysis.
Reduced pesticide use by 33.72%. The vast majority of sites use the recommended application rates.
Saved 448,725,444 gallons of water by tracking usage, modifying practices when necessary, and choosing plants adapted to the region's climate that require lower inputs.
Properly disposed of potentially hazardous materials, including:
- 1,856 batteries
- 44,487 gallons of oil
- 882 tires
- 160 gallons of antifreeze
- 33,974 pounds of hazardous waste
- 2,955 light bulbs
- 39,247 pounds of other materials
Implemented a variety of positive changes in order to improve their environmental practices, including:
- Recycling (94 sites)
- Planting native vegetation/plants (58 sites)
- Changes in fertilizer usage (68 sites)
- Changes in pesticide usage (44 sites)
- Changes in irrigation practices or updating irrigation equipment (36 sites)
- Water conservation initiatives (44 sites)
- Erosion/Runoff prevention (16 sites)
- Wildlife habitat installation (79 sites)
- Education (13 sites)
- Less or no maintenance areas (18 sites)
- Plus a wide variety of other practices
